The Full Review
The Ranger answers a question most grill companies ignore: what if you want real wood-fired flavor at a campsite?
At 60 lbs with a latching lid and carry handles, it's portable — but barely. You need a truck bed or large SUV to transport it, and you need a power source. For RV camping, tailgating at powered lots, or cabin weekends, it's perfect. For backcountry camping, look elsewhere.
The cooking performance is surprisingly good for the size. The cast iron grate holds heat well, and I've done steaks, burgers, chicken, and even a small pork butt on it. The 184 sq in cooking area handles food for 2-4 people comfortably.
Smoke flavor is genuine. This runs on real hardwood pellets just like full-size Traegers, so you get that authentic wood-fired taste that propane portables can't match.
The Digital Arc controller maintains temperature within 15°F of your target, which is acceptable for a portable unit. Keep Warm mode holds food at serving temperature after cooking.
How Does It Compare?
At a glance against its closest portable pellet grill rivals.
| Grill | Rating | Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traeger Ranger Portable Pellet Grill (this) | 4.4 | $399 | Portable pellet smoking for camping and tailgating. |
| Char-Griller Akorn Kamado | 4.3 | $299 | A steel kamado at a fraction of the ceramic price. |
| Weber Q 2200 | 4.5 | $269 | The Aussie icon. |
Who Is It For?
RV enthusiasts who want real smoker performance on the road. Tailgaters who want pellet-grilled food at the game. Cabin and campsite cooks with power access who refuse to compromise on flavor.
Final Verdict
The Traeger Ranger fills a niche nobody else is serving — portable pellet smoking. At $399, it's a legitimate smoker that travels. If you have power access at your destination, it delivers full-size flavor in a compact package.
