Weber Spirit E-310 Not Getting Hot: Causes and Fixes

A three-burner Spirit E-310 in good condition preheats to roughly 500–550°F with the lid closed and all burners on high. When it tops out 150–250°F lower, the cause is almost always fuel delivery rather than a failed grill. This page walks the checks in the order Weber's own support documentation and the Spirit owner's manual put them, from the cheapest test to the parts that actually need replacing.

One burner weak, the others normal

Inspect that burner tube's ports and venturi for spider webs, grease or corrosion — this is not a regulator fault.

Flames look strong but grill temperature is low

Suspect wind exposure, a mis-reading lid thermometer, heavy grease on the Flavorizer bars, or preheating with the lid open.

Only poor in cold weather

Cold cuts propane vapour pressure and the cookbox sheds heat — use a full cylinder and block wind. Never warm a cylinder indoors.

Fixes, easiest first

1. Confirm you actually have fuel

  2. Weigh the cylinder on a bathroom scale. A standard 20 lb cylinder has a tare weight (TW) stamped on the collar — typically 17–18 lb. Total weight minus tare is the propane remaining.
  3. Under roughly 4 lb of propane, swap or refill before troubleshooting anything else.

Expected resultA cylinder with 8 lb or more of propane should support full output on all three burners.

When to stopStop here if the grill returns to normal heat with a full cylinder — nothing else is wrong.

2. Reset the regulator (clear the excess-flow bypass)

  1. Turn all three burner control knobs to OFF.
  2. Close the cylinder valve fully and disconnect the regulator from the cylinder.

  4. Turn all burner knobs back to OFF.
  5. Reconnect the regulator to the cylinder hand-tight, then open the cylinder valve slowly — a slow quarter-turn at a time — and wait a few seconds before opening it fully.
  6. With the lid open, light the left burner first, then the centre and right burners.

Expected resultFlames should be blue with small yellow tips, roughly 1–2 inches tall, and the closed-lid temperature should climb past 500°F within 10–15 minutes.

When to stopIf the reset restores full heat, you are done. If flames are still low after two reset attempts, move on to the hose and burner checks.

Always open the cylinder valve slowly and with all burner knobs OFF. Opening burner valves first is the most common way to re-trip the bypass.

3. Inspect the hose and regulator for kinks, damage and blockage

  1. Trace the hose from the cylinder to the manifold with the gas off. Straighten any kink, and free the hose from anywhere it is pinched by the cart frame or side table.

  3. With the cylinder valve open and burner knobs off, brush soapy water on the cylinder connection, the regulator body and the manifold fitting.

Expected resultNo bubbles anywhere, no cracks, and a hose that runs in a smooth curve with no contact against hot metal.

When to stopReplace the hose-and-regulator assembly rather than repairing it if you find any crack, cut, hardened section or bubbling at a crimp.

Never test for gas leaks with a flame. Brush a 50/50 solution of dish soap and water onto fittings with the gas turned on — growing bubbles mean a leak. Shut the cylinder valve immediately if you find one.

4. Clear burner ports and venturi tubes

When to stopIf a burner tube is rusted through, split, or has ports that have eroded into each other, replace the burner set rather than cleaning it.

5. Rule out heat loss and thermometer error

When to stop troubleshooting

  • You smell gas at any point and the smell does not stop when the cylinder valve is closed — leave the grill, shut the valve if it is safe to reach, and do not light it again until the leak is found.
  • The regulator body is cracked, corroded or has been in a fire, or the hose is cut, melted or hardened — replace the assembly, do not tape or clamp it.
  • Flames lift off the burner ports, roar, or burn back inside the venturi tube with a whistling sound.
  • A burner tube is rusted through or the manifold shows heat damage — that is a parts replacement, not an adjustment.
  • Two full regulator resets, a full cylinder and clean burners still produce weak flames: contact Weber support, since the grill is likely to have a failed regulator or valve.
