Lump Charcoal

Natural hardwood burned to charcoal in irregular chunks — burns hotter and cleaner than briquettes, with no binders.

Lump charcoal is just hardwood that's been pyrolyzed (burned without oxygen) to drive off everything but the carbon. It lights faster, burns hotter (up to 1200°F+), and produces less ash than briquettes. The downside: irregular chunk sizes burn unevenly and it's harder to maintain steady low temps with lump alone. Preferred fuel for kamados.
