The Full Review
I've taken the UCO Flatpack on a dozen camping trips and it's earned permanent status in my pack. The setup is genuinely 30 seconds — unfold the sides, lock the tabs, drop the grate on top.
Cooking over wood requires fire management, but that's part of the fun. I've cooked burgers, sausages, vegetables, and even bacon and eggs on this little grill. For 1-2 people, it handles a full meal.
The stainless steel is thin by design (weight savings), and it will warp slightly after heavy use. Mine has a slight bow after a year but still functions perfectly.
Wind is the enemy. Without a lid or windscreen, gusts blow heat sideways and make temperature control impossible. Position against a rock wall or build a windbreak.
For the price and packability, there's nothing better. Full-size camping grills cook better, but they don't fit in a backpack.
How Does It Compare?
At a glance against its closest campfire grill rivals.
| Grill | Rating | Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| UCO Flatpack Portable Campfire Grill (this) | 4.4 | $35 | Packs flat, sets up in seconds, and turns any campfire into a cooking station. |
| Marsh Allen Cast Iron Hibachi | 4.1 | $35 | The classic American backyard hibachi — affordable, compact, and perfect for balcony grilling and small gatherings. |
| Weber Go-Anywhere Charcoal | 4.3 | $45 | The original portable grill — folds flat, weighs 15 lbs, and actually grills well enough for real cooking on the go. |
Who Is It For?
Backpackers and ultralight campers who want real grilling on the trail. Car campers who want a backup grill that takes zero space. Festival and tailgate goers who need something tiny and cheap. Gift buyers looking for a unique sub-$40 outdoors gift.
Final Verdict
The UCO Flatpack is the best campfire grill for people who prioritize portability. At $35 and under 3 lbs, it earns its keep on every trip. Don't expect full-size grill performance — expect surprisingly good campfire meals with zero hassle.
