Grilling with charcoal on a boat raises an obvious question: what happens to the embers? The Marine Kettle 3 answers it with a fully enclosed hemispherical body, a hinged lid, and a base that isolates the fire from your deck.

The Full Review
The hinged captive lid is the detail that makes this grill work at sea. On a backyard kettle you lift the lid off and set it aside. Do that on a boat and one wave later the lid is on the bottom and you have a very expensive ashtray. Here it swings on a hinge and never leaves the grill.
The hemispherical body does two jobs. It cooks the way a kettle cooks — convection, indirect zones, that unmistakable charcoal flavour — and it fully contains the fire. Embers cannot fall out sideways because there is no sideways.
Ash is the part you have to plan for. My method: let coals die completely with the vents shut, then dump the cold ash into a sealed metal container and dispose of it ashore. Never over the side, never into a plastic bin.
Preheat is a real cost. Twenty minutes with a small chimney versus five with gas. On an anchored lunch stop that is fine. Underway, gas wins.
What you get in return is flavour that no marine gas grill can produce. For a lot of owners that is exactly the point.
How Does It Compare?
At a glance against its closest marine charcoal grill rivals.
| Grill | Rating | Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magma Marine Kettle 3 Charcoal Grill (this) | 4.5 | $389 | Charcoal flavour on the water — a hemispherical 316 stainless kettle with a hinged lid and a bottom that stays cool enough to mount. |
| Tandoor Home Clay Oven | 4.5 | $399 | Authentic Indian cooking at home — 700°F+ radiant heat for naan, chicken tikka, and seekh kebab that no grill can replicate. |
| Magma ChefsMate Connoisseur Series Gas Grill | 4.3 | $349 | The dock-and-deck crossover — Magma's marine build quality in a tabletop shape that works on a boat, a dock or a tailgate. |
Who Is It For?
Boaters who anchor out and cook slowly. Charcoal loyalists who refuse to compromise. Owners who want one grill that works on the boat and at the beach.
Final Verdict
The Marine Kettle 3 at $389 is the only charcoal grill I would put on a boat. The captive lid and enclosed body are what separate it from a dangerous improvisation.
