Nobody buys a grill because they love cleaning it. But after testing 50+ grills, I can tell you the difference between a grill that takes 5 minutes to clean and one that takes 45 minutes is enormous. Some grills are designed with cleanup in mind — grease management systems, removable drip trays, dishwasher-safe grates. Others are a nightmare of baked-on carbon and inaccessible corners. Buying Advice

1

Gas grills are the easiest category to clean overall. Grease drips through Flavorizer bars or heat plates into a catch pan. Empty the pan, brush the grates, done. Weber's grease management system is the gold standard — a sloped drip tray funnels everything to a disposable aluminum pan.

2

Flat top griddles are deceptively easy. Scrape the surface with a metal spatula while it's hot, wipe with oil, done. No grates to brush, no flare-up residue. The Blackstone's rear grease trough catches everything. Daily cleanup takes 2 minutes.

3

Electric grills with removable plates are the easiest of all. The George Foreman's plates pop off and go in the dishwasher. The Ninja Woodfire's grill grate is dishwasher safe. If cleanup is your #1 priority, go electric.

4

Charcoal grills are the hardest to clean. Ash removal, carbon buildup on grates, and no grease management system make charcoal grills the most maintenance-intensive. Kamados are slightly better thanks to enclosed ash systems, but they're still more work than gas.

5

Line your drip pan with aluminum foil. This one trick eliminates 80% of gas grill cleanup. Foil the catch pan, toss the foil after cooking, replace with fresh foil. Cost: $0.10 per cook. Time saved: 15 minutes.

6

Clean grates while they're hot. Brush immediately after cooking when residue is still soft. Waiting until the grill is cold means scrubbing hardened carbon. A good grill brush and 60 seconds of effort after every cook prevents major deep-cleaning sessions.
