The Full Review
Rod holders are through-bolted into reinforced sections of the gunwale because they are designed to take the load of a fighting fish. That makes them far stronger than a stanchion rail, and the load from a grill is vertical rather than a side torque.
The fit is the thing to check. Nearly all modern rod holders are 1-1/2" inside diameter and the post is machined to match. Older and some imported boats use 1-5/8", and the post will rattle badly in one. Measure.
The angle problem is real and the levelling head is the reason to buy this version rather than a plain post. Most rod holders are raked 15–30 degrees outboard. A fixed post holds your grill at exactly that angle, which puts your burgers in the water. The adjustable head brings it back to flat.
Stowing is trivial — lift the post out, cap the holder, done. Nothing left on deck.
My only real gripe is the obvious one: you lose a rod holder for the duration of dinner. On a boat with four holders that is a non-issue; on a boat with two it is a genuine trade.
